Boundary Waters Canoe Trip 2020

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) is one of the most pristine, peaceful and beautiful places in the USA; it’s truly special.  This trip is being led by Trevor Burke and Matthew Croco, who both have experience in the BWCAW.

Dates have been finalized and two permits secured. Each permit allows 9 campers and no more 4 canoes. At this time we are asking for commitment to the trip with a $50 deposit. Sign-up closes 3/21.

Overview of the trip follows, but Trevor is available at most Troop meeting to chat and will be holding an information session at a near future meeting.

Itinerary:
7/11: Depart from North Liberty, arrive in Ely, MN.  Overnight at Voyageur North Outfitter bunkhouse.
7/12: Outfitter preparations, tentative visits to International Wolf Center, North American Bear Center or Soudan Underground Mine.
7/13-7/17: 4 nights in the BWCAW
7/17: TBD – Camp/hotel in MN

Both groups will enter and leave from Entry Point #22/23 Mudro Lake.
Group 1: (small loop – approximate route)
Leader: Trevor Burke
Ability: Moderate
Distance: @20 miles with @13 portages
Basecamp at two lakes on this route. Will be plenty of time for fishing and other camp/exploring activities.

Group 2: (large loop – approximate route)
Leader: Matthew Croco
Ability: Challenging
Distance: @30 miles with many portages and open water. Will cross temporarily into Canada.

Paddling and staying at different lakes on each day. Will be limited time for fishing, but will pass by several sights, including one of the best sets of pictographs in the BWCA.

Cost:
As some of the activities and menu have not yet been finalized the final cost is not yet known. We anticipate the trip to cost $500-600, but with good planning we hope to reduce that cost. Other variables include renting of additional gear, such as canoe packs and dry bags should individuals need them.

Preparation Schedule:
TBD, but will be coordinated with and will combine some activities with the Hiking MB. Expect 2-3 activities a month from April - July

This information has been shared already, but as a reminder…
  • This will not be a guided trip
  • We will rent Kevlar canoes from outfitters – these are strong and lightweight
  • If canoe specific gear such as packs and drybags are needed by anyone, there will be an option to rent from the outfitter
  • Meals will be purchased and packaged ahead of time to reduce cost

Pre-requisites:
  • While age is not a restriction for this trip, technical ability, strength, endurance are very important for a safe and fun trip and will be evaluated through preparation activities, including canoeing, hiking, portaging around the Eastern Iowa area this spring/early summer.
  • Canoeing merit badge required or majority of requirements completed.
    • We will work on this during our pre-trip preparations for those that don’t have it already.
    • Adult partner will be required for under 12 or if other pre-requisites need a little work.
